Why one answer does not fit every paper
The figure people quote — 500 words to a page — is only true for Times New Roman 12 point, single spaced, with one-inch margins. Change any of those and the answer moves. Calibri 11 fits closer to 550 words on the same page; Verdana 12 fits around 400.
Spacing moves it further. Double spacing halves whatever the single-spaced figure was, which is why the same 1,000-word essay is two pages for one instructor and four for another.
The settings that actually change the count
Font family and size, line spacing, and margins do most of the work. Paragraph spacing matters more than people expect: leaving Word's default 8-point gap after every paragraph on top of double spacing can add most of a page across a long essay.
- Font and size: the largest single factor.
- Line spacing: double roughly doubles the page count.
- Margins: one inch is standard in APA, MLA, and Chicago.
- Paragraph spacing: set to 0 before and after unless told otherwise.
- Headings, block quotations, and reference lists all add pages.
When you are given pages instead of words
A brief that asks for five pages is asking for a word count in disguise, and it is worth converting before you start. Five double-spaced pages in Times New Roman 12 is about 1,250 words — a very different project from five single-spaced pages, which is 2,500.
If the brief gives pages and no formatting, ask. The difference between the two readings is an entire draft.
Padding is visible
Widening margins, enlarging the font, or stretching line spacing to reach a page count is obvious to anyone who reads student work regularly, and most departments specify formatting precisely to prevent it. Adding a real paragraph is faster than fighting the layout, and it is the only version that improves the grade.
