How the average is worked out
Each grade converts to points on the 4.0 scale: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, and so on, with a minus taking 0.3 off and a plus adding 0.3 except at A. Those points are multiplied by the credit hours of the course, added together, and divided by total credits.
Credit weighting is why a B in a four-credit course pulls harder than an A in a one-credit elective. A straight average of the letters would give the wrong answer, and it is the most common mistake in a hand calculation.
Weighted and unweighted
An unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 and ignores course difficulty. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes — commonly 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB — so it can exceed 4.0.
Schools differ. Some weight only AP, some weight dual enrolment, some do not weight at all. A failing grade earns no bonus however the class was labelled, which this calculator follows.
Cumulative GPA across terms
To get a cumulative average, enter every course from every term rather than averaging the term GPAs together. Averaging averages ignores that terms carry different credit loads and will be wrong whenever they differ.
What this cannot tell you
Institutions vary in ways no general calculator captures: whether a repeated course replaces the original grade or both count, whether pass/fail credits enter the calculation, whether plus and minus grades are recognised at all. Some universities use a 5.0 or percentage scale entirely.
Use this for a working figure and your registrar's published policy for anything official.

On a weighted scale, usually by 1.0 per class. On an unweighted scale they do not, though they still matter to admissions.
How do I calculate a cumulative GPA?
Enter every course from every term together. Averaging term GPAs gives the wrong figure whenever the terms carry different credit loads.
Does a failing grade get the AP bonus?
No. An F is zero points regardless of how the course was labelled, which is how schools calculate it.
Is this the same as my official GPA?
Treat it as a working figure. Policies on repeated courses, pass/fail credits, and plus-minus grading vary by institution.
